John Hosea has been around the HR block more than a few times.
After starting his career in public accounting, he transitioned into leading benefits, insurance finance and risk management for a large retail organization. Later, he worked for a large restaurant company managing benefits, compensation, HR operations, technology and risk management. That brought him to his current role at Health Care Service Corporation, where he’s been a benefits leader for nine years and a key player in HCSC’s COVID-19 relief efforts.
And this year, we’re proud to welcome John as a speaker at Engage 2022. We caught up with him for a sneak peek at what she’ll share during his session, and to learn why agility is the most important skill an HR pro can have as we head into 2022. Here’s what he had to say.

Health Care Service Corporation, a Mutual Legal Reserve Company (HCSC), and an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, is the largest customer-owned health insurer in the United States, which operates our Blue Cross and Blue Shield® Plans in Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. What energizes you about your job?
Our purpose to do everything in our power to stand with our members in sickness and in health speaks to the passion we have for our members, customers and the communities we serve. Our entire organization aligns with and is passionate about living our purpose every day. In my role I have the opportunity to engage with employees all across our organization at all levels in many different facets and that energizes me every day.

Why is it important for employees to engage with and take full advantage of their health and wellness benefits?
Our health and wellbeing plays such an important role in both our personal lives and careers – it is vital we take care of ourselves.
What is the biggest challenge to driving employee engagement with their benefits?
Communication, education, awareness and knowledge.
What’s the one biggest thing benefits teams should be prepared for as we head into 2022?
We need to remain agile and embrace change as challenges and opportunities will continue to be very fluid.
Which employee benefits and perks should employers be most focused on in the coming year and why?
Those which add true value. Mental Health and resiliency remain clearly in focus.

Be a knowledgeable consumer.
