Is your benefits package truly equitable?

As employers, we insure half of the folks in this country. (Half!) Our friend Spiderman reminds us, with great power comes great responsibility. What does that mean for HR leaders? We need to ensure we’re doing the work to educate ourselves on healthcare discrimination and disparities that exist within our benefits package.

While our recent survey revealed we’re all on the same page about the importance of health equity, there’s still work to be done as far as overall understanding of the issues.

For example, when we investigated whether companies are putting words into action to make healthcare access truly equal for their people, things got a little blurry. Refer to our health equity infographic for further intel.

These findings highlight the need for culturally competent benefits education. If we don’t know which benefits are most important to each employee group, and we don’t know how to speak to each group in a way that will resonate most with them, then our messages get lost. And if we don’t know where to meet our employees where they are, on the platforms where they’re most likely to look for benefits information, then we’re simply ships passing in the night.

In other words, we’re not personalizing the way we talk about benefits—and it’s impacting how our employees learn about, understand, and interact with their healthcare plans.

Check out chapters four and five in our report for actionable strategies and examples on advancing health equity. We don’t have to be experts, and we don’t have to be perfect, but we do have to get started. Let’s do it together!
