Ed LottReceived a BS in computer science from the University of Central Florida. Ed has worked on a number of diverse software development projects. His first job was doing maintenance programming on a command/control system for experimental satellites. After that he was the lead architect for a Macintosh system that managed locomotives. Ed next went to work for Apple Computer as a field system engineer. He then went into consulting where he worked on a collection of library automation programs. Ed was the lead architect for Jellyvision/Learn Television’s THAT’S A FACT, JACK!® READ. He has since taken over maintenance of Jellyvision’s authoring tools. Why I like to Work at JellyvisionEven though I’m a technologist, I’m generally appalled at the contortions people are forced to go through when using software. At Jellyvision, the focus isn’t on software – it’s only a tool for us – but rather on great experiences: writing, art direction and live performance. The goal of our software tools is to enable our creative endeavors without impeding the creative process. Technology isn’t the primary goal to which everything else is bent – it’s the other way around. I like that.I’m also appalled at the lack of common-sense that seems to pervade most software development efforts. Given that we aren’t in the software business – we’re in the experience business – we tend to take the shortest technology path to reach our goals. If we only need a spreadsheet, we’ll use a spreadsheet. If we only need a simple form application, we’ll build a simple form application. If a safer, productive programming language (java, php) gets the job done, we can use it vs. sticking with something more performance-oriented but harder to work with (C++). Common-sense reigns. |
